Our alpacas are new to the farm, and in time they will live with the poultry and sheep to act as protection from foxes. They will bond with the flock that they are kept with and keep them safe from predators. This is what they are used for in their native countries.
Juliet has named them. The white one is Ambrose, ('belonging to divine mortals') the No.1 black alpaca is called Alfie ('the wise counsel of the elf') and the black alpaca with an ear tag is named Archie ('noble and truly bold').
Alpacas are originally from the Andes in Peru, Chile and Bolivia. They are members of the camelid family and are related to Llamas. Alpaca wool is referred to as the ‘fibre of the gods’ - twice as strong, warmer and lighter than Marino wool. They live outside all year round.
Alpacas are efficient grazers and have a soft padded foot which causes minimal soil damage thus making them an environmentally friendly option.
