How it all began – Sheepdrove Organic Farm, A History

Sheepdrove Organic Farm is owned by publishers and environmental campaigners Peter and Juliet Kindersley. Why did they choose to become organic farmers?

The Sheepdrove story began over 30 years, when we bought a dilapidated farmhouse on the top of the windswept Berkshire Downs to practice our dream of self-sufficiency. Over the years we bought more land bit by bit – and today Sheepdrove is a thriving farm at the heart of the local community.

Our original aim was to protect ourselves from the polluting chemicals used by farmers all around us and recreate the original downland landscape that we fell in love with so many years ago. The conversion to organic farming has been an immensely positive experience. We have witnessed the miraculous generosity of nature as the countryside around us has come back to life and, with the return of myriad birds, wild flowers, small mammals, reptiles and insect life, land which was turning into an arid prairie has been transformed to a rich tapestry of wildlife.
